A Year of Fashioning A Better Future

AOur intent and our actions have always been informed by progress. We look at an impact report as a way to measure how much we have left to go rather than a report card or a gold star. Sure, let’s celebrate the wins (and there are a lot of them), but let’s also focus on the areas where we can get even better. People deserve more than empty promises from their brands; they deserve accountability and meaningful action. Now is the time to dig even deeper. Together.

GAIAS, Tencel Lyocell was the most used fiber material in both 2022 and 2023, increasing from 43.98% in 2022 to 50.78% in 2023. Meanwhile, the use of cotton decreased from 34% in 2022 to 23.55% in 2023. Additionally, there was a significant increase in the use of bamboo fibers in 2023, rising from 3.13% in 2022 to 10.7%. The usage of other materials decreased from 18.89% in 2022 to 14.97% in 2023.

These shifts may reflect a strategic realignment in GAIAS's material choices, possibly for environmental considerations, reducing the use of cotton in favor of more sustainable materials such as Tencel Lyocell and bamboo fibers. Such adjustments not only affect the environmental footprint of the products but could also impact the cost structure and market positioning of GAIAS's product offerings.

Every unboxing is surprising, delightful and recyclable.

GAIAS product packaging is designed to be better for the environment as it’s made and when it’s recycled. We’ve improved the overall recyclability of our packaging by redesigning components like product trays, plastic wrap and foam cushioning with fibre-based materials that can break down in mixed-paper recycling streams alongside lower-quality materials like cereal boxes. All the more reason to recycle our packaging when you’re done with it.

The latest innovations in labelling and lamination are helping us address the remaining four per cent of plastic in our packaging footprint. To eliminate the need for labels on 14 and packaging, we developed a custom, high-resolution printer that can print directly on the back of boxes. Eliminating these labels will avoid over 300 metric tons of plastic and more than 3,700 metric tons of carbon emissions.22 A new overprint varnish that replaces the traditional plastic lamination also improves the recyclability of our packaging while maintaining the look and feel you know and love. And our ongoing work in improving packaging has paid off — all GAIAS Watch packaging is 100 per cent fibre based and made with 100 per cent recycled and renewably sourced wood fibre.
